I visited a nearby Court for an Affidavit related stuff last week.
I saw this person still using this typewriting machine in the era of smart wireless keyboard and printers.
(For those of you who rarely visit Government/ Court offices in India - you will find it a bit strange)
Out of my curiosity, I started interacting with him and will share whatever insights I could gain from the discussion.
1) Maintainance Cost : His maintainance cost is still low. Though his manufacturer of the current office typewriter stopped production - he still gets spare parts easily.
2) Personalisation : Most of the requests he gets are of customised letters in Hindi language - the translation tools are yet to mature.
3) Dependency on power source :No dependency on power or backup source. Usually, the area is crowded and the typewriter allows him to remain seated in a shed throughout the day.
4) Customer delight : For him, the typing experience is unmatched. For him the key sounds are the magic, and he needn't even relook to whatever he types - he trust his keys. The membrane or switch keyboards he tried are somehow not that good.
5) Willingness to pay : He is willing to shed up to $150-200 for a smart type writer, no extra features - just the same keyboard experience, printing support and ability to save templates for reuse.
6) End of life of the product : He is aware about it, and is optimistic about a similar solution by some company.
PS: This is not a survey or preplanned customer research. There is scope of biases, validation, etc. I recorded this video and took a picture of his neat and clean machine. Check this original post on LinkedIn Maybe ten years later, when these machines are extinct - this will serve as Memorabilia. Which is one such tool, that got replaced by technological advancement, but you still remember for its end user experience? #experience #productdesign #customerinsights #video #writer #language #translation #printing
