This June, I completed eight years in this IT Industry.

I am sharing the eight pieces of advice that I got during my journey that helped me grow in my career.

1. You cannot rely only on a job at work for learning. Stay updated on different products in your organization, participate on online forums and communities and stay updated with latest trends.

2. It is important for individuals to go and work in different teams to understand diversity in culture and environment. When you work/ interact with people from different backgrounds, you become a true team player.

3. Work to solve the problem, technology is just the enabler. If you spend too much time thinking about technology only, you may miss important pain points /larger picture.

4. Try out different paths in your career. Doing the same thing for 10 years won’t fetch you 10X experience. Doing 10 things in 10 years, will.

5. If you want to become something, put your heart and soul in it. Interact with folks who have already achieved that. Try to learn from their mistakes. Let the world know, “You are the person” who wants to become “Role X/Y/Z’.

6. The only way to learn the art of writing is by starting to write. Write drafts, get it reviewed by your peers or those who are good writers and improve.

7. Ideally in any job, you should have a balanced ratio of Learning and Earning. If it is tilted on either side, then relook into your priorities. If both are missing, better to start looking for better opportunities.

8. Invest 10% of your earnings back to upskill yourself. It could be technical, managerial, an executive education or even in your hobbies such as Photography, painting, yoga etc.

What is the best advice you received, that helped you in overall growth?
